DAIS Communications Room Overhaul
Client: State Government - Department of Administration and Information Services
Site Location: Wakefield House
Value at Completion: $190,000
Year Completed: 2005
Project Description:
During June 2005 Expert Data Cabling designed and implemented a patch by exception solution for the Department of Administration and Information Services cabling infrastructure within their communications room. This required shutting down all communications equipment for the period of the long weekend in June.
The long weekend cutover involved; disconnection of existing cabling both horizontal (400 data and 200 voice) and backbone (voice) and relocating it to the new Krone Highband 25 frames. EDC relocated all of the optical fibre backbones (250 cores) by using fusion splicing to new panels, removed redundant cabling, installed new cabinets to house new switches, fibre panels and active equipment and re-patched all services. EDC also organised design and coordinated the installation of an island frame for mounting the termination frames using professional cabinet makers, which was done prior to the long weekend.
The DAIS communications room project had large risks associated. The level 3 communications room is the central hub for the majority of the State Government communication services which is estimated to provide 5000 users with connectivity to the Government network. Expert Data Cabling had a tight schedule to maintain, making sure that all services were disconnected and reconnected within the long weekend. An audit was carried out over a period of five days on all patching within the communications room including voice, optical fibre and 4-pair data services. This planning was critical to the project to ensure that the configuration f patching for new services was identical to the existing. EDC were able to complete the project with no disruption to any DAIS services.
